Plan your next move

From our experience, we understand that there are different reasons that students with good grades do not necessarily end up studying at university. When this is a choice, this is empowering, because that student can then apply their academic inclination in other contexts where they see the best opportunities for themselves. But when this is not a choice, it is sad to see students give up on dreams for further study. This is what our #nextmove series is about.

The main challenges that first gen university applicants face depend on the individual. But the main ones we’ve seen over the years are: a) a firm belief that the family cannot afford the expense; b) now knowing what to study, or where; c) not knowing how and when to apply and d) not knowing how or where to find information. We hope that our #next move series will start to speak to some of these challenges.

Our first #nextmove session starts on Thursday 21 October 2021 in Stellenbosch. In partnership with their physical sicence teacher, we are inviting 12 learners at Luckhoff High School in Idas Valley to attend this session. This is part of the Small Things Fund 7s Programme, in which we look to support young aspiring first gen university students aiming for 7s passes at school so that they can transition into a university career. The purpose of this first session is to help these prospective first gen applicants to plan their next move, wherever they are on their journey to university.

We are grateful to our supporters – had it not been for your support, we wouldn’t be able to host this event. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a short report back after the event.
