I am Sesethu Magqo, born and raised in the Eastern Cape. I come from a small town called Cofimvaba between Engcobo and Queenstown.
The Small Things Fund is a home away from home. We have a family where we are cared for in many aspects and for me that is the most important part. A backup system, your supporters. People who believe in you more than you do. As a first-generation student, to me it always sounded like a myth that it is always difficult to get to the end as you are paving a way. However, you eventually do, just like I did. Like they say, my name is not just a name it is attached to a degree. I am still trying to comprehend it, and it is surreal.
Things were not always easy, but I would always remind myself about the first time I came to university, which was through Scimathus. Scimathus is a bridging course (offered at Stellenbosch University) where aspiring students can improve their grade 12 Mathematics and Physics marks. This is where I first obtained 115 out of 150 for Mathematics. Under the circumstances I was under, that all looked impossible, but I did it. The first year came and I remember obtaining 85 out of 100 for my Financial Accounting. This kept me going for sure. Even with the state I was in, still I was able to produce those good marks, it made me hope and believe that I am capable, and I can. To this day I still have that exam book.
As much as different circumstances have brought us to The Small Things Fund, there is nothing that puts you at ease than talking to someone who understands and who has experienced what you are going through; and you know too it shall be well. The Small Things Fund taught me or reminded me about the importance of having a community. From our monthly gatherings, to bumping into one another on campus and getting a hug you did not know that you needed… From the likes of Dr Rhoda, Dr Angel, Dr Ethel, our Monika who makes us dessert in all our gatherings and many others who are working behind the scenes… I thank you.
